Baby Size and Development: Week 16

Today is week 16.

Our baby is about the size of an avocado.
We have to watch what we say...tiny bones forming in baby's ears mean the little one can now pick up your voice. Eyebrows, lashes and hair are starting to fill in, and taste buds are forming. And, we could find out the gender soon.

Baby Size and Development: Week 15

Today is week 15.

Our baby is the size of a Naval Orange.
Continuing the march towards normal proportions, baby's legs now outmeasure the arms. And, finally, all four limbs have functional joints. Out fetus is squirming and wiggling like crazy down in the womb.

Baby Size and Development: Week 14

Today is week 14.

Our baby is the size of a lemon.
Our adorable little fetus is busy with thumb sucking, toe wiggling, and (not so cute but equally amazing) making urine and breathing amniotic fluid as the liver kidneys and spleen continue to develop. Lanugo is growing all over the body for warmth.

13 weeks appointment

Well, I had an appointment with my midwife this morning for a regular check up.

It went good and was short and sweet.

We heard the baby's heartbeat again and the heart rate is in the 160s, which according the the old wives tale indicates that the baby is a girl! We got to listen for about 2 minutes, then heard a big SWOOSH and couldn't hear the heartbeat anymore! It is so neat to hear the baby move!

My midwife gave me the ok to take chewable kid vitamins since the prenatals are causing me severe constipation and stool softeners do not work. My only other option was to take milk of magnesia a few times a week and I don't want to do that. So I'll take the chewable vitamins! She also told me to take claritin or zyrtec for my allergies instead of benadryl, since benadryl makes me very sleepy.

Oh, and I can finally dye my hair!! I'm saying BYE-BYE to my dark roots and gray hair!! I've been holding off on doing it until we made it to the second trimester because I didn't want to cause any ill effects on our rapidly developing baby!

I go back in 4 weeks for a regular appointment and we should schedule our BIG ultrasound at that appointment too!

Dearest Baby: Letter 2

Dearest baby,

We have almost made it to the second trimester and I cannot tell you how excited I am to move out of the "danger zone" first trimester! Mommy will be able to relax now and not worry so much. I've worried and prayed for your safety for over 2 months now (since the end of January when we found out you were here!).

You are moving around and giving Mommy reassuring nudges (that I feel as flutters right now) when I'm relaxing or just being still for a little while. It is so wonderful to feel you move. I cannot wait until you get a little bigger and Daddy and your brothers and sister can feel you move too.

We are anxious for May to get here so we know whether you are a boy or a girl! We already have names picked out, but will you be a Lily or a Tristan?

Mommy, Daddy, your brothers and sister all love you and can't wait to meet you in October!

All my love,

Mommy
